“The unhealed wounds of chure hill”
Wounds of chure
The Chure hills are the foundation of life in Rupandehi.
They play a vital role in groundwater recharge, act as a natural air cooler, and support the daily needs of farmers and their livestock.
During my reporting visit to the Chure region, I noticed many black scars on the hills caused by forest fires.
When I asked a local elder why these fires occur, he explained that people deliberately set fires because fresh grass grows afterward, which is then used as fodder for their animals.
This belief still exists among many local communities.
Unless awareness is raised and people living around the Chure are educated door to door about the environmental consequences of such practices, these destructive activities are unlikely to stop.
