One smoker, Thousand victims

Kathmandu, Kathmandu ValleyJul 2026

Shared Toxic Air

The cigarette sits quietly between the fingers of an old woman, but its smoke carries a story far beyond the person holding it.

Every puff releases thousands of harmful chemicals into the air, including tar, carbon monoxide, and fine particles that slowly damage the lungs.

Over time, smoking destroys the tiny air sacs responsible for breathing, making every breath more difficult and increasing the risk of chronic lung disease, heart disease, and lung cancer. Yet the harm does not end with the smoker.

The smoke spreads into the surrounding air, where family members, friends, and strangers breathe it in without choice.

Children, the elderly, and people with asthma are especially vulnerable.

Even a few minutes of secondhand smoke can irritate the lungs, while long-term exposure raises the risk of serious respiratory and heart diseases. This photograph reminds us that air pollution is not created only by factories and vehicles.

Sometimes it begins with a single cigarette.

A personal habit can become a public health problem, proving that the air we pollute is the same air we all share.
