Each morning I climbed a gray hill and held a jar of hopes up to the heavy, smoky sky.
They tried to catch a clean crystal sky, but it snagged on a smokestack and broke into tiny promises.
Neighbors picked up the pieces and planted trees, slowly knitting the air back together.
Sunlight began to slip through, and children learned to chase blue instead of smoke.
