“Shankhamul: A Beautiful Space Facing Environmental Challenges”
Fresh Air For Living ?
Shankhamul, located along the Bagmati River in Kathmandu, is home to the Nepal headquarters of the Art of Living.
Over the years, local communities, organizations, and volunteers have worked hard to transform this riverside area into a peaceful public space where people can relax, spend time with friends and family, and connect with nature. A park has been developed on one side of the river, including an open space for yoga and meditation.
Members of the Art of Living regularly gather there to practice yoga and promote healthy living.
The area offers beautiful views of the river, greenery, and the surrounding city, making it a popular destination for recreation and relaxation. However, one major challenge remains, the poor condition of the Bagmati River.
Unpleasant odors and pollution from the river often reduce the comfort and attractiveness of the area.
While significant efforts have been made to improve the surroundings, the river itself still requires greater attention and restoration. Air quality is another concern for visitors and residents.
Recent air quality monitoring in Kathmandu has shown AQI levels ranging from around 65–78, which falls under the Moderate category, meaning the air is generally acceptable but may affect sensitive individuals.
PM2.5 levels have been recorded between approximately 17–24 µg/m³, exceeding the World Health Organization's recommended annual guideline. Shankhamul represents both the progress and challenges of urban environmental management in Kathmandu.
Continued efforts to clean the Bagmati River and improve air quality can help make this riverside destination a truly healthy and enjoyable space for future generations
